Quattro String Quartet are returning to Chirton, having played for us 2 years ago. They bring together considerable solo, chamber and orchestral experience, with each of its members performing regularly across the UK and abroad with leading ensembles and orchestras. As a quartet they enjoy a busy schedule and have performed recitals in Worcestershire, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Buckinghamshire and Colchester.
Quattro comprises Eleanor Percy (violin), Sarah Wormell-Evans (violin), Tamasin Cline (viola) and Bryony Moody (cello).
They gave a terrific concert last time, and will surely do the same again.
Programme
Mozart – ‘Dissonance’ Quartet (K.465)
Despite the nickname ‘Dissonance’, Mozart’s string quartet no. 19 is filled with tenderness and sunshine and a true example of the composer’s mastery.
Smetana – String Quartet no. 1 in E minor ‘From My Life’
Smetana’s string quartet no. 1 is an autobiographical chamber work, titled ‘From My Life’. It depicts his life, from youthful joy, first love, commitment to the arts to the tragedy of his sudden hearing loss.
Libby Croad – Early Spring
Libby Croad is a composer, arranger and violinist based in London. Her string music is highly acclaimed, and has been performed by some of the UK’s best professional orchestras, choirs and ensembles across the world. ‘Early Spring’ is a new piece for string quartet inspired by William Wordsworth’s ‘Lines Written in Early Spring’. Lush, unfolding harmonies evoke the freshness of the natural world, while an undercurrent of tension reflects the poem’s quiet unease. This performance will be its world premiere.
Tickets
Tickets include a glass of wine or soft drink during the interval.
As ever, the musicians’ fees are underwritten, so all the ticket sales go to looking after the fabric of the church.
A report on the works.
In time for the last concert, the wrecked lead roof had been replaced.
This time, the decayed, but beautiful West window has been extensively repaired, by real craftsmen who have done a fantastic job. And you all contributed by buying concert tickets, for which we're most grateful.
The top photo shows part of the window where some of the deterioration is clear. The middle photos show sections of the window being repaired and reassembled - every pane with a yellow sticker was broken. The bottom photo shows the repaired window in all its glory.
